The Trainers

A teaser from my debut novella, about a girl who thinks too much and feels too much... This is the moment everything starts to change for her. ((Be honest… would you have tried them on? 👇)
They were sitting on the top shelf above the suede cowboy jackets, like royalty. Honestly, I’m not fibbing, they were glowing as if they possessed a power! Sparkly red trainers.
Me peepers nearly popped out me head just like Wile E. Coyote’s when he thinks he’s fooled the Road Runner for real this time. I couldn’t pull away even if I’d wanted to. It felt like the trainers were holding me there, like the sun keeps its planets close by.
They looked like they’d dropped in from somewhere better. As if they knew something I didn’t, been to places I couldn’t even dream about. It felt like they’d been lined up just for me, like they were my destiny. This wasn’t just a coincidence this was synchronicity. I could almost hear them, whispering to me, we’re the answer.  Something popped in my chest, probably hope, though it might have been heartburn from the bacon sarnie Dad made that morning. Mam says he makes them too greasy. She dabs hers with a tea towel like she’s cleaning up evidence.
They were vintage Balldidas. The sign beside them said so, it also said they had built-in anti-trip technology. Wow anti-trip! To add to that, they offered more speed, stamina, and better posture. People are always telling me to stand up straight. And to top it off underneath in gold lettering:
